Introducing Our New Director/Teacher- Aubrey Howell!

My name is Aubrey Howell. I grew up in South Jordan, but now I live in Riverton with my husband and son. I attended Brigham Young University from 2003-2007. In April 2007, I married my best friend, Britton. We now have a son, Briggs, born in April 2012, who is the light of our lives. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, spending time with family & friends, singing, and crafting.

I have a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from BYU. Most of my student teaching and cohort work was completed in kindergarten classrooms. After my kindergarten student teaching, I applied for and accepted an internship at Jordan Ridge Elementary in South Jordan. What’s funny is…I actually went to Jordan Ridge Elementary as a student. It was different (a gooddifferent) being there as a teacher instead of a student. It was my 2nd grade teacher at Jordan Ridge who instilled the love of learning in me and who inspired me to be a teacher.

At Jordan Ridge, I taught 2nd grade for two years and then moved to a 3rd grade teaching position. I am currently teaching my 5th year in 3rd grade. I love to teach and have learned so much in these past 7 years. Some of my favorite subjects to teach are reading and music. I love reading stories to my students and making literature connections to the world and to their imaginations. I love teaching songs to help students remember things and to experience the fun that music can bring into their lives.

Being a teacher has helped me be a better parent by using the skills I have learned in my teaching career. I am excited to be a part of your children’s lives as I spend time teaching and helping them develop a love of learning.

I have enjoyed my time teaching your children and will miss interacting with you.  Thank you all for being such great parents and making my experience with teaching preschool so wonderful.  I have truly loved it and will miss it!

November/December

November and December are always busy months in Preschool.  We had a lot of fun preparing for our Christmas Program!  The alphabet books have been turning out really cute.  Here is a sneak peak at your preschooler's work:

The letters we focused on these past two months were: F, T, W, C, and S.

I hope you are all enjoying your winter break, and am looking forward to seeing your preschoolers in the New Year!

October

Our first month of preschool was fabulous!  The kids have really grasped how things work, and are becoming more independent.  We have made some excellent progress on name writing.  I am so proud of each student for trying so hard to perfect their name.  The snack bucket has been very popular, and I've been very impressed with the creativity of the snacks.  Thank you for being so willing to provide a snack!  Our preschoolers have absolutely loved being able to bring their own snack to share with the class!

October is always such an exciting month.  We have already celebrated Peyton's birthday, and are starting to do our individual spotlights.  We have our class field trip to the pumpkin patch this Friday, and our Halloween party at the end of the month.  Our themes this month are: Down on the Farm, Pumpkins, Jack-o-lanterns, Rhymes and Riddles, and Happy Halloween.  Which means the letters we will focus on are: Dd, Pp, Jj, Rr, and Hh.  (See pictures below of the Letter Art that we have been, and will be, working on this month.  By the end of the year we will have an entire book with all 26 letters!)  Numbers this month are: 4, 5, 6, and 7.  Please try to point out these letters and numbers in your preschooler's every day environment.  Reinforcement at home will help them remember!

We began splitting up into literacy groups this week.  Students have been separated according to a reading level, and I will be working with them in smaller groups at their own level.  Consistently reading at home with your preschooler is the best way for them to develop literacy skills.  We are all excited to master our letter names and sounds, and begin reading!

Thank you for all of your support as parents!  We are off to a wonderful year.

Below is some location info for the field trip on Friday, can't wait to see you there!

September!

First day of school

Our first week of school has been so busy!  We have already celebrated two birthdays (Happy Birthday Mason and Tate!), learned all about each other with our brown bags, and have even learned a little bit about ourselves!

This week we are focusing on the Letter Mm and the Number 1.  We came up with many words that start with the Letter M, and have been practicing the sound it makes.  Every week we will be doing a Letter Art Project, based on the letter of the week.  We'll be compiling all of the completed letter pages into an Alphabet book.  I will be keeping these pages at school with me until we have all of the letters completed, so don't be concerned when your child doesn't bring their "Letter Art Project" home with them.

For the rest of September, we will be learning about Letters Ee and Bb, and Numbers 2 and 3.  Please take the time at home to reinforce what we are learning at school, by pointing out these letters and numbers when you see them, or by asking your preschooler to come up with words that begin with these letters/sounds.

We have also been focusing on names.  Remembering how to spell and write names is very important!  Our theme this week is "Marvelous Me!"  We've been talking about how we are all unique and special.

I had the opportunity to bring some "caterpillars" into the classroom this past week.  We found them in our tomatoes, and have been so excited to watch a butterfly cycle.  As we've done some research on these caterpillars, we've found out that they are actually called Tomato Hornworms, and that they do not make cocoons.  Sadly, we have had to release them into the dirt so they can bury themselves and transform into moths.  If you or your preschooler are interested you can learn more here.  Even though we won't be able to watch a butterfly cycle, we still had fun observing these Hornworms in our classroom.  The two we were able to observe were named "Firetruck" and "Cinderella."

I have loved getting to know your preschoolers!  We are having a great time learning together and getting to know one another!  Thank you for your support as parents.  It should be a great September!
