Family Literacy Bags

My students and their parents absolutely love the Family Literacy Bags we use at our school!
What are Family Literacy Bags? Family Literacy Bags are designed to encourage parents to read with your children!

Your student will bring home a different bag each week of the school year. The bags will feature themes such as Emotions, Families, Space, and Nature. The bag will contain several books that emphasize that theme, as well as activities (and all the materials needed to do the activities) that go along with the books. Then you, as a parent, get to sit down, snuggle up, and enjoy quality reading and learning time with your child.

These bags were developed by the Emma Eccles Jones Center for Early Childhood Education at Utah State University. As a former part of the EEJ Center team, I have seen the wonderful things these bags have done for schools, teachers, parents, and students.

Family Literacy Bags will be sent home on Wednesdays, and will need to be returned on Mondays!

Upcoming Changes for New Discoveries

Hello to all of my preschool contacts,

I have decided not to teach during the 2014-2015 school year, but am excited to announce that I will be handing the reins over to a fabulous teacher, Aubrey Howell. Aubrey is a neighbor and friend, and I have worked with Aubrey in teaching situations. I am confident that she will do a fantastic job with the preschool I have worked so hard to build. Aubrey has a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and has been teaching at Jordan Ridge Elementary School for the past 7 years. She has always wanted to have her own preschool and is excited to teach preschool next year!

I have enjoyed my time teaching your children and will miss interacting with you. Thank you all for being such great parents and making my experience with teaching preschool so wonderful. I have truly loved it and will miss it!

Ms Jolynn, 2013-2014 Director/Teacher- Bachelors in Elementary Education

When I was a student at BYU, and it came time to pick a major, there were so many degrees that intrigued me. I weighed many pros and cons to many different majors, and finally decided on Elementary Education for a few reasons. 1. I love kids. I have always loved babysitting, teaching swimming lessons as a teenager, and being the oldest of 5 kids. Being with children has always been so natural to me. 2. I love learning. Classrooms feel like home to me. I've always loved school, and being a teacher just made me feel at home. 3. I wanted to pick a major that would be compatible with being a mom. I love the things that I’ve learned from my degree that have helped me be a better mother. And I love the things that I’ve learned from being a mother that have made me a better teacher. They definitely go hand in hand. 2013-2014 will be my third year teaching preschool, and I’ve absolutely loved it. Preschool aged kids are just so full of fun!

Ms Andrea, 2013-2014 Teacher - Bachelors in Early Childhood Education

Andrea wanted to be a teacher her whole life. As a child, she would often play “school” rather than “house.” Andrea is optimistic, happy, and creative. She loves music, and sings and plays the piano. Andrea has experience in tutoring, she has volunteered in both Kindergarten and 3rd grade classrooms, and worked at the BYU preschool and kindergarten for two years in college. In 2011, Andrea graduated from BYU in Early Childhood Education, and then taught Kindergarten in Spanish Fork. She is now a mom, and loves extending her teaching experience to teaching her daughter every day at home.

My name is Aubrey Howell. I grew up in South Jordan, but now I live in Riverton with my husband and son. I attended Brigham Young University from 2003-2007. In April 2007, I married my best friend, Britton. We now have a son, Briggs, born in April 2012, who is the light of our lives. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, spending time with family & friends, singing, and crafting.

I have a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from BYU. Most of my student teaching and cohort work was completed in kindergarten classrooms. After my kindergarten student teaching, I applied for and accepted an internship at Jordan Ridge Elementary in South Jordan. What’s funny is…I actually went to Jordan Ridge Elementary as a student. It was different (a good different) being there as a teacher instead of a student. It was my 2nd grade teacher at Jordan Ridge who instilled the love of learning in me and who inspired me to be a teacher.

At Jordan Ridge, I taught 2nd grade for two years and then moved to a 3rd grade teaching position. I am currently teaching my 5th year in 3rd grade. I love to teach and have learned so much in these past 7 years. Some of my favorite subjects to teach are reading and music. I love reading stories to my students and making literature connections to the world and to their imaginations. I love teaching songs to help students remember things and to experience the fun that music can bring into their lives.

Being a teacher has helped me be a better parent by using the skills I have learned in my teaching career. I am excited to be a part of your children’s lives as I spend time teaching and helping them develop a love of learning.
